Al Jazeera (English) Here's a controvertial idea: read news items about current affairs in the Middle East written by a news company based in the Middle East! That is, unless they get bombed by the West. But hey, that's the price we pay for democracy, right?
Al Jazeera Staff Blog Interesting. A blog by staff members of Al Jazeera. An interesting take on things.
Baghdad BurningA twentysomething Iraqi woman writes about daily life in occupied Iraq. The first three years' entries have been published by The Feminist Press

Happy News A website dedicated to providing news stories with a positive edge.
Hermes Press 'A journal of social and metaphysical inquiry'. Asking important questions, with a focus on US Imperialism.
Is consciousness located *outside* the body? A scientist who has researched Near Death Experiences. Two interesting points: 1) There is no brain activity at the point when NDEs occur 2) Given 1, an alternative explanation of consciousness is to posit it outside the body as some sort of field, and interpret the brain as a 'receiving' device (like a radio or TV)
Karmic Archery An explanation of karma, using archery as a metaphor. Very insightful.
LJ Birthday Calendar Randomly found this. Some guy created a birthday calendar in an attempt to get a user for every day of the year. There are still blank spaces. Anyway, drop by and pay a surprise visit to whoever shares your birthday!
Money: How it works An interesting overview of the principles of how money actually works.
Pangea A map of Pangea; the world 250 million years ago.
Pangea Ultima A map of what the Earth is predicted to look like in 250 million years time when all the continents have meshed together!
Prime Minister's Questions Transcripts of PMQs. This excites me. Greatly.
Random Acts of Kindness A three step guide to making the world just that little bit better: 1) Print off cards 2) Do something nice for a stranger 3) Leave a card
Troll: The Provoking Will amuse anyone who has experienced trolling. The question is, how many of those trolls were actually people playing this game? o.O
Website that Provides Inpirational News OMGWTF! There's actually good stuff happening in the world?! Um... yes. This site contains inspirational news stories.
Wedding Anniversaries A list of traditional and contemporary associations with wedding anniversaries. Never thought I'd need something like this, but hey, it's all good fun. Although, it looks like you're only supposed to celebrate every fifth anniversary once you hit 15 years. ^_^

Prose
Project Section Comments
Editorial Underwear, or the lack thereof First installment of what should develop into a series of editorials/opinion pieces written in a 'this should be a column in a magazine' style (one might almost call it... an editorial style ^_^). Inspired by the writing of [info]neanahe.
Perception Whole Short story. First person perspective. A guy can hear objects talking, and the photocopier doesn't like him very much.
Tower and Tendrils He leaves the field of battle (Prologue) The opening of a project looking into the Tower and Tendrils. Where this goes is anyone's guess.
(as above) Tower and Tendrils (Mulch) Impressionistic exercise in active imagination. A vision of a tower, tendrils, desolation and hope.
The One About the Girl in the Alley Part 1 Short story based on a thought experiment. Two characters in two diferent cities face the same decision on the same night. A reflection on perception, choice and the manipulation thereof. Part 1 details the events of that night and the immediate aftermath
Voices in the Night Whole Short story. A collection of fragmented voices that hint at some central issue that is never fully explained.

Yay, please do!

One thing I forgot to do was put a 'last updated' marker on it. For the poetry and prose, it'll just be linking to the posts that contain those pieces; I thought it would be useful to have an index of them all for quick reference.

I'm going to start migrating my poetry here so the poetry list should get a bit longer!

Mmmm... maybe I should divide that into three tables so I can keep everything in alphabetical order...

Or that it resides (partially) elsewhere in the body. Or that its physical manifestation in the brain isn't limited to the signals that we are, at present, able to detect.

Are you familiar with Jack Spicer? He talked about being himself a radio that picked up poems sent by Martians. In consequence, he felt that the personality of the poet should be kept out of the final poem as much as possible.

No, not familiar with Jack Spicer, but find that view interesting. I've long held that literature of genuine artistic value is something that the author channels. Of course, I can now put this in a Jungian framework and say that the author is in tune with the collective unconscious and so, in a way, is channeling the underlying images of a collective experience; if consciousness is located outside of the body in some weird field of consciousness, then that would make this an even more profound channeling.

And yes, I agree that an alternative view is to place consciousness partially in the body. Given the author's argument about DNA being responsible for anchoring consciousness in the body, another alternative would be to say that DNA is itself conscious and capable of a unified collective experience that the brain then mixes with sense data to produce reality. So the brain stops, but the DNA still thinks.

Or something.

Wow, I love your poems o_O they're really, really good. I mean, I don't understand much about poetry, but... they read beautifully. I mean... yeah. Heh. *sheepish*

uhm, anyway. The reason I'm here... ah... I'm sorry for barging in like this, but at the moment I'm kinda looking for information on university life in GB since I'm from Germany and you seemed like the best person to write to. Hope you don't mind.
Would you tell me a bit about the university of York? You've named it as your school so I though I'd just write you a comment or something. Is it nice to live there?

Greetings
Cel

Wow, thanks for the praise! I'm glad you found some stuff that you liked.

I'd be happy to let you know about life in York. If you want, you could reply to this comment with your e-mail address and I can e-mail you. You're not on my friends list, so it will be automatically screened and I'll delete it once I've e-mailed you.

The brief synopsis is: York is a beautiful place to study but can get claustraphobic if you're in need of night life.

Let me know and I'll send you a longer overview.

What are you planning on studying?

Really? How bizarre!

Guess maybe I should move that table somewhere else...

Things are ok. I'm getting knocked back for one graduate scheme too many at the moment, so am a tad crestfallen. However, the latest one served as a kick in the ass, as I've been lazy and only applied to one at a time.

So I'm applying for seven in one go this month and will find more to apply to each month until someone gives me a damn job!

^_^

How's things with you?

Also, I was wondering, do you have a CD of some of your own material? It'd be good to hear some of what you've been producing.

Graduate scheme knockbacks are like a right of passage i guess, everyone gets them.

I'm cool. Really busy though. I don't have a CD *yet* of my stuff because it's not production ready, but you'll definitely be one of the first to get it when it happens.

Candy is next friday so I'm swamped in flyering too.

Awesome! I'll come back and actually read later...

Your links section looks intriguing to say the least. I have a feeling I might get a bit of inspiration just from strolling through that.
